Appointment Overview

Routine Dental Exam

A routine dental appointment typically consists of a comprehensive oral exam, a professional cleaning, and any necessary X-rays. During the oral exam, the dentist will carefully examine your teeth, gums, and mouth for any signs of problems, such as tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. They may also check for other issues, such as TMJ disorders, bite problems, and tooth grinding.

The professional cleaning, also known as a prophylaxis, is performed by a dental hygienist. This involves removing plaque and tartar from the teeth, as well as polishing and flossing the teeth. This helps to prevent tooth decay and gum disease and can help to keep your mouth feeling clean and fresh.

If necessary, the dentist may also take X-rays of your mouth to help them diagnose any problems that are not visible during the visual exam. These X-rays can help to detect issues such as tooth decay, abscesses, and impacted teeth.

After the exam and cleaning, the dentist will discuss their findings with you and recommend any further treatment that may be necessary. They will also provide you with information on how to care for your teeth and gums at home, as well as any potential warning signs to watch for.
